Powerup Ideas

Performance based Powerups (Could be called "Boons")

Power ups that are rewarded on certain levels if the player types a bunch of words without making mistakes (word streaks). These cannot be bought by players before the level.

Powerup 1 : Wavelengths

Similar mechanic to "Radiations" but these give the player a buff.

If a player types 20 words in a row consecutively there is a 50% chance of beam of light (like a halo) spawning on the player with a letter spawning on top of the player. This letter should spawn for a very small time (0.7 seconds?) so only skilled players can take advantage of it.

Depending on the planet one of the following effects takes place -

  1. "Wavelength : X-Ray" - If player manages to activate it they can destroy obstacles by just typing the first and last letters of the obstacle.
  2. "Wavelength : Gamma" - Shields the player from the next attack.
  3. "Wavelength : Luma" - Transforms the players into a "white hole." Unlike a black hole that is known to suck things in, the player pushes all incoming obstacles back.

Powerup 2 : Shooting Stars

These powerups always fly overhead above the player. The player must shoot it when it is right above their spaceship so it drops the item that gives the players a buff on the spaceship.

If the player had a perfect match in the last game a shooting star may randomly spawn in the next match.

  1. "Shooting Star : Lifeforce" - Gives the player a life back.
  2. "Shooting star : Ferrum" - Players temporarily shoot bullets with extra penetration causing all obstacles in its line of path to be destroyed.

Mockup of shooting stars -

The above mockup shows how a shooting star may spawn. It would never pose a threat to the player as it would never fly towards the player directly only overhead.

The above mockup shows the ideal position for the shooting star to be shot in order for the player to gain the boost from it.

The above mockup shows the star exploding after being shot and the gift/boon dropping onto the player and granting them whichever effect.

Craftable Powerups (Could be called "Utilities")

These are powerups that can be crafted using the material the player collects from destroying obstacles of various types.

  1. "Frost Field" - needs 20 "Ice" to purchase 1 charge. Freezes all opponents on command much like a Cryogenic Moon.
  2. "Heat Wave" - need 40 "Magma" to purchase 1 charge. Act like Vulcanian Moon and destroys all opponents on screen.
  3. "Fortification" - need 200 "Gravel" to purchase 1 charge. This prevents the player from receiving damage for 10 seconds.
  4. "Cryo Shield" - need 200 "Gravel" and 30 "Ice" for 1 charge. Acts like "Fortification" but for 10 seconds. Once the duration expires, the shield explodes and has a Cryogenic Moon like effect.
  5. "Lava Guard" - need 200 "Gravel" and 30 "Magma" for 1 charge. Vulcanian version of Cryo Shield.
  6. "Spacial Ocean" - needs 20 "Magma" and 20 "Ice" for 1 charge. The player emits a flood of water that converts all crygenic and vulcanian obstacles into their terrestrial equivalents and slows them down considerably.

Concise descriptions to be used in game -

  1. "Frost Field" - Freeze all obstacles for 8 seconds. Cost 20 "ICE"
  2. "Heat Wave" - Destroy all obstacles on screen. Cost 50 "MAGMA"
  3. "Fortification" - Block obstacles for 10 seconds. Cost 200 "GRAVEL"
  4. "Cryo Shield" - Slow all obstacles upon damaging contact for 10 seconds. Cost 15 "ICE" and 50 "GRAVEL"
  5. "Lava Guard" - Destroy 5 random obstacles upon damaging contact. Cost 30 "MAGMA" and 80 "GRAVEL"
  6. "Spacial Ocean" - Push back all obstacles and slow them for 5 seconds. Cost 25 "MAGMA" and 25 "ICE"

The above mockup shows an example of what "Cryo Shield" could look like. Players can activate it by simply tapping on powerup icon on the upper right side of the screen and it would activate it. Upon activation the slot goes grey to show that the powerup has been used up for that match but the remaining two "Cryo Shields" the player has equipped are still available to use.
